3 TIPS: 1) KNOW WHAT YOU'VE FOUND! 2) E-SEARCH SYSTEMS SIMILAR; 3) ADV. SEARCH CODES

Dissect Research Question

1) Rewrite statement(s) into question form and circle the nouns

2) Jot down 1-2 synonyms or "Phrases of 2+ words" for each of the nouns

3) These and close synonyms will be your initial keywords/search terms

4) If there is an overarching perspective to consider, add it as the last keyword  

 

  

  

 Select ADVANCED Search Option for College Research

Begin research with specialized encyclopedia reference source with signed articles (author's name provided) about your topic

ALWAYS use "ADVANCED SEARCH" Option

If E-Search software has HELP/ADVANCED SEARCH TIPS! USE THEM!

Utilize Standard E-Search Codes to Increase / Decrease # of Search Results

Expand/Increase Number of Search Results

Truncate (place an * after the root/stem of search term) [exist* = exists, existing, existance]

Select Keyword FIELD to search source record and full article/document for term

Connect keywords in boxes with the BOOLEAN Operator "OR"  to retrieve possible synonyms for term

Expand Date Range to retrieve articles from a broader publication period

 

Narrow/Decrease Number of Search Results

Use "Phrase Searching" by placing proper names and terms in "   "  to locate them in source in that exact order

Select the "Author", Title" or "Abstract" FIELD to search record for term

Add another search term/box

Connect keywords in boxes using the BOOLEAN Operator "AND" which will require that both terms appear in the record/document

BOOLEAN Operator "NOT" connecting terms will eliminate an unwanted subset of results 

Narrow Date Range to retrieve articles from a shorter publication period

Control for the Domain that a website is affiliated with:  .edu   .org   etc.

Gather "Names of Key Individuals" / Theories Along the Way!

If more search results are needed

Combine the "names of these specific people", events, movements using another source's Advanced Search system

 


Mine Bibliographies

"MINE" (cross reference) bibliographies of the BEST sources; identify EXPERTS!

E-SOURCES: Know what you've got!

ZOTERO: Collaborative Citing

?? --> KEYWORDS

Is the universe real?  

[universe, real*]

Can we know anything objectively?

[know*, objective*]

Is there an afterlife? [afterlife*]

Does God exist? [god*, exist*]

 

Use NOUNS from ? as KEYWORDS

COMBINING TERMS

Expand via synonyms with Boolean Operator "OR"

Then limit resuts with Boolean Operator "AND"

Examples:

afterlife OR immortal* AND proof*

universe OR creat* OR cosmos AND real*

God* OR creator OR "infinite ruler" AND exist*

know* OR reason OR cognition AND object*
