This is our first year to try out "Easy Bib School Edition". It is much more reliable and has many more features than the "free" version.
The purpose of your National History Day entry is to provide rich information & background about your topic. It is critical that the judges can easily identify which sources you used to find that information. It is expected that most all of the content for your project will originate in your sources (books, periodicals, database articles, and web sites) and this is why you must provide citations or captions throughout the project.
While ALL entries require the submission of an Annotated Bibliography, citing sources within projects is done differently depending on whether they are Multimedia entries or papers [see below]
I. MULTIMEDIA ENTRIES - Captions
[PowerPoints, Web sites, Photostory & other electronic presentations, Exhibit Boards]
All require captions under embedded quotes, photos, art, and reference to the source of sound tracks. Use the publication information found in full citation to create a caption (or abbreviated citation) . Provide the following in a caption whenever possible: "title", creator, date. TWO Examples :
"Ray Bradbury's Autograph" "George Washington"
Dark Carnival, 1st edition, 1974 by Gilbert Stuart, 1821
II. PAPER ENTRIES - "In-text" or "Parenthetical" Citations.
EVERY TIME that you introduce a new FACT that you found in a source, SUMMARIZE a researcher's finding, or directly QUOTE an author/researcher you must place a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence to let the read of your paper know where you found this specific information.
The parenthetical citation will come before the period for the sentence and will include: 1) the author's last name only; and 2) the page number on which it was found - if it came from a print/paper source. If the information comes from an electronic source, leave out the page#.
FACT/PARAPHRASE from a book/print source
In April 1975, RI had less than 1,000,000 residents (RI Almanac 65).
SUMMARY from an electronic newspaper article
Thanks to the efforts of so many human rights organizations, fewer countries are employing children in the workplace (Schaefer).
QUOTE from the Mahatma Gahdhi web site
"Nonviolence is the first article of my faith. It is also the last article of my creed" (Gandhi).
Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is excellent. Visit this wonderful web resource for lots of examples and explanations so you can properly create your citations.
