As La Salle Academy turns to celebrate 150 years this coming fall, we thought it was fitting to take a look back over the decades since our inception to recognize great books by a wide range of writers. We have selected titles we believe to be representative of the decade in which they were written. These are books that have either passed the test of time or for those written more recently, promise to do so.
And if you are wondering why Harper Lee’s classic To Kill a Mockingbird, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, or F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, have been left off the list, it is certainly not because they did not make the cut, but rather, we excluded many classic titles that remain on the reading lists of our faculty today.
Students are required to read any two titles on this list.
Book descriptions were gathered from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Entertainment Weekly and Oprah.com.
