This summer, we celebrate the short story, with three contemporary collections: Hungry Hearts (freshmen/sophomores), which weaves a series of interconnected stories that explore the many ways food goes beyond nourishment by symbolizing love and despair, family and culture, belonging and home; His Hideous Heart (juniors), a creative and sometimes chilling contemporary retelling of the works of Edgar Allan Poe; and First-Year Orientation (seniors), a cross-genre anthology set at a fictional college where the stories of several young people intersect at a pivotal and life-affirming time in their lives.
Students will read four selected stories from these collections, along with slightly longer classic tales listed next to the class year. These stories will introduce you to an author or genre you are likely to encounter during your academic journey.
In summary, you will read the classic tale(s) AND the four selected short stories from the short story book.. We hope you enjoy them.
