How to Avoid Plagiarism

  • Whether you intentionally or unintentionally plagiarize, you can be punished.

  • Do not copy/turn in someone else's work as your own - even if you pay for it or they give you permission.  This is cheating and is wrong!

  • Both direct quotes AND paraphrases require in-text citations.  It's not YOUR information, so you need to give credit to the source.

  • Using media created by someone else (photos, video, music, images, diagrams, etc.) requires a citation.

  • You cannot self-plagiarize - turn in the same assignment twice.

  • Citations & Bibliographies/Works Cited pages should follow a specific format.  Your teacher will let you know which format to use.  Common format types include MLA, APA and Chicago.  At La Salle, you will almost always use MLA format.
